The Trend Towards Simplicity

Tuesday, 21 June 2005, 16:00-17:30
Room: Großer Saal
Chair: Dr. Fiona Williams, Research Director, Corporate Research, Ericsson, Germany

Tired of complicated interfaces and rarely used features, many people desire simple, easy-to-use terminals. This trend starts to be echoed within industry: Vodafone is about to launch a phone just for phoning and sending SMS, and Philips' recent marketing campaign is called "sense and simplicity."

While this striving for simplification could be further fueled by the specific needs of emerging markets in developing countries, the research community seems to head for ever increasing complexity.

The trend towards simplicity: a disruptive threat to complexity-focused research, or a big new chance?
